I'm not coming to his defense because I'm QUITE sure Rich can do that very
well on his own. I believe this is born out of a great deal of frustration.
In one of the industry rags I got yesterday there's a tight shot of the
Boston Acoustics table model. The call letters displayed were non other than
WOR. If I'd seen the call letters displayed on a station/network I helped
build I would feel rather put off myself. From my own experience, I have
mixed feelings about a station I worked for in Dallas that has tubed in the
ratings. Am I happy? One side of me is because of how I was treated at the
time when we had that station very high in the ratings. The more sensible,
compassionate side of me is not. It's a classical station and anytime I see
one take a hit (or abandon the format) I feel the pain. But I
digress...somewhat.
I'm going to guess Rich is not a design engineer (I'm not) and this is a
design problem. I came into this whole thread late as I joined the group
only recently but it's easy to see IBOC was not given enough thought or
testing before it was declared as "THEE" system. I'm hoping this whole thing
doesn't end up with many saying: The operation was a success but the patient
died.
I think Rich is hoping that if he creates enough lathter someone lurking in
here will have the expertise and power to get the job done right even if it
means scrapping the IBOC system for another. Look what we went through with
FM stereo. (I'm dating myself) It was thought through, tossed around, tossed
back, other systems were put on the table and eventually we got, what many
consider, to be the best system. Yes, it needs work and I hope it's fixed
but it's possible the horse may already be out of the barn. I could be wrong
and I hope I am.
It's unfortunate, but in these days we seem to be forced to RUSH things
through. Obviously this is not in the the public's interest or the
industry's. Marshall McLuhan said " I'm DESCRIBING not PRESCRIBING." Rich
and others in here are hoping somone will wake up and write the right
prescription.
Just some thoughts on a Saturday morning. These words and a nickel won't
even buy you the Sunday paper. :)
