Nope, it.. sucks. Have you made some off air recordings (perhaps noting
location and sig strength) ? Just curious. 

After Rita and particularly, Katrina, having good out of market coverage
was critical to folks knowing what was up in their former home town. The
remaining broadcasters banded together got the word and news out. The
ability to receive 890 hundreds of miles away was important. 

I don't think we should throw this feature of AM away. 

Of course, in non-emergency times, AM can be a wasteland. I have tuned
across the band, and gotten 15 or so listenable stations. Of which, 5 had
the same syndicated show, and some national newscasts top of hour.
Nothing local or compelling. Just different ads run in the local slots of
the show. The next 3 or 4 stations had a different show. So of 15
stations, I had maybe 3-5 different programs to choose from. That's not
good, either.
