I recall a line from the late Peter Ustinov regarding his biography.
His schoolmaster reported to his parents that, "This boy has great
imagination that must be curbed at all costs." Imagination can be a
very negative thing because it upsets established order and
expectation. It must be curbed at all costs because it is not
predictable.

Seen another way, in manufacturing industry one of the worst errors
that can be made is and underprojection of anticipated sales. It is
very nearly as bad as an overprojection. It is easy to see way
overprojection is a problem, but only when you have experienced it,
do you begin to recognize all the problems of underprojection.
Both are equally capable of killing a company without swift, strong
management intervention. Where large money is involved estimates
must be reliable. They must be achieved, not more not less. More
than 5% under or over performance can mean the end of a career.

To everything there is a season. Looked at differently this implies
a natural flow and order. It that course of events there is a time
for change and a time for execution of what is decided. A good idea
at a bad time is no better than a bad idea at a good time. Both are
worthless.

This IMHO is not the time to waste effort trying to stop a steamroller.
If the steamroller crashes, then there will be some preparation and
conditioning for other design ideas. However, at the present time,
I'm convinced that however right we are, no one with an investment
in the outcome wants to hear what we have to say, and by investment
I include political as well as monetary capital.

IMHO DRM offers a better option for AM and probably will offer a
better one for FM, but that has all the potential of a lead balloon
at the moment. If I'm right, I'll be ready when the time is right.
If I'm wrong, it won't matter and IBOC will be accepted. Whatever
we do technically for IBOC will accommodate DRM or anything similar.
Thus, unless we are given new spectrum, IMHO it is a time for waiting
and keeping powder dry.

The history of engineering is filled with examples of inferior ideas
becoming *the* industry standard because they had "the money" behind
them. This is true for automobiles, electronics, and almost any sector
of engineering for manufactured products you can name. Money, not the
best technology decides the issue. That is the hard reality. To
believe otherwise *is* unenlightened.
