I should have expected that. Phil Boyce at WABC is sharp. He has the
unique ability to steal the heritage of WOR. None of us thought John
Gambling would appear on another New York station. Phil hired him for
weekends, then weekdays. I've asked many people which station has had
the Gambling family on the air for decades. The answer I'm getting is
WABC. Personally, I think John sounds much better on WABC than he
ever did on WOR. Near death experiences often do wonders.
Even at his height at WOR people still thought Bob Grant was at WABC.
Fortunately, Arbitron credits names as well as calls. Now, Phil can
steal more of those of those traditions (even though Grant was on
WABC for ages) and make his time at WOR disappear.
I would never have thought that Bob Grant would be replaced with a
cooking show. That was the intent. Rocco walked away. I have the
impression that WOR's turning to brokered programming might be the
right way to go. It makes a future sale much easier than carrying all
those huge talent contracts. 13 weeks vs. 2 years is much more
appealing to a buyer.
