[BC] KFI Tower and a few FACTS!

Strobes wouldnt have helped at all. As a pilot of many years experience I
find towers painted aviation orange and white are by far the easiest to see
in all kinds of visibilty situations except nite, and red side lites and
beacons are far better than strobes at nite. Stobes at nite seem to jump
all over the place. You cant get a good fix on their location from the air.
The hardest towers to see are unpainted stainless towers with strobes.
About 15 years ago, we had the owner of the Venice Florida airport fly into
the side of Storer (Comcast now) Cable TV headend tower. The plane was
impaled in the side of the tower about 50 feet from the top. The dent is
still in the tower. KFI's tower had good paint and there was nothing more
that could have been done except putting some kind of GPS proximity warning
device in the plane...

This is also what Marv Collins told me. The FAA is to blame for that tower
not
being strobed! They jerked KFI around for something like 18 months.
Another example of Govt. at it's best! (worst!)

The paragraph below appears to have a few errors in it. I may have
misunderstood what was told to me. Again, as I stated, it is hearsay.
Tonight I was contacted by someone who was more familiar with the
strobe upgrades and the relationship between Cox and the pilot's
association. It appears the delay was due to delays from the FAA for
approval to move forward with the installation of the strobes. When
the FAA approval finally came, the monies set aside had expired. So
while my original message on this particular subject was close, it
appears to not be 100% accurate. I hope this clears things up a bit.
