Well the fact that I'm San Francisco and actually remember the 60's, yes I
do. One of the first underground stations was KMPX-FM (actually the first
station I worked for but quite a few years before this incident). A jock who
later became a good friend of mine (actually my music director for awhile at
KCBS-FM) locked up the station completely because of either a strike or a
format change. (that is the part that is foggy) He played the sound of the
Ocean for I don't know how many days. It's a very memorable event in San
Francisco underground radio history. I believe he did the station I.D.'s but
that's all.
Now another story about the sorted history of KMPX but has nothing to do
with a take-over. The chief engineer flipped out on LSD and jumped out of
the first story window of the station absolutely naked. Well, needless to
say, he was arrested and thrown in the clink. However, (and this is the
funny part) since he was the chief the management asked if he could do his
job during the day and go back to jail at night. A work release program was
approved and he did his chief duties during the day and went back to jail at
night for as long as he had to. (don't remember how long that was)
Oh, the crazy things that happened in San Francisco radio in the 60's.
