Yes...Deems Taylor does the narrative about the recording. I agree with you
on the Telarc recording. Those cannons fall short of the Mercury recording.
(that's the one I talked to Bob Orban about. It was the direct-to-disc
recording. We had a direct-to-disc progarm in 1980 on KDFC that I hosted and
I but the Optimod in bypass. Talk about scary!) On the Telarc recording the
cannons fall flat (muffled) where the Mercury recording (with that "edge")
made them so much more explosive and earth shaking. Mercury did Tchaikovsky
right with that version.
