As of 1998, KCBS San Francisco used the phrase "world's oldest radio
station" in
its sign-on/sign-off copy. Wasn't heard often, of course, because their only
off-air time was the Sunday morning maintenance window.

There are many other stations that can make the claim of being on the air
prior to the date of KDKA as a broadcast facility. Many of their roots were
as experimental or amateur stations.

The old WRR-AM, Dallas, Texas built by Dad Garrett at his home and later
moved to the City of Dallas Central fire station. Station played records
between fire calls. WRR used to claim an FCC license dated 1920. I know they
raised money from the citizens of Dallas to get their first commercially
manufactured transmitter a Western Electric 6B in 1929.
The Texas Almanac credits WRR as the first radio station in the state of
Texas.

WDAE in Tampa used to have photocopies of their license from the Maritime
Commission out of New Orleans before 1920.

I believe KCBS had something similar from the Maritime Commission in San
Francisco.

None of the above will ever change history because none of the above had the
money involved to write the history.
