Imus' hearing was seriously degraded even back in the early 80's. I
doubt he could tell any difference between xmtr's unless someone or
something told him which one was on.
That said, the 317 always sounded a little cleaner, but comparatively
less loud than the MW50, driven by the same chain. I always assumed it
was slightly higher IMD and distortion from poor high freq. negative
carrier pinchoff in the 50 that contributed to the very slight apparent
loudness increase ('filling in the holes').
The 317 (installed in 1982) was newer than the MW50 (installed in 1980).
I always preferred the 317, which ran as the main tx from the time it
was installed until after WNBC became WFAN. After that I have no idea.
