The VP-50 and old phasor was removed about 2 1/2 years ago. The VP-50 had long
been an aux, replaced by one of the first DX-50's sold by Harris. They now
have a DX-10 for an aux though there was talk when I was there (about a year
ago) of replacing it with a new 50 KW BE for a main, and moving the DX-50 to
backup service. I spent the better part of a month (almost two weeks with
Ralph Wegman of Harris) repairing annd updating the DX-50 (it was in terrible
condition and would only run about a day wihout shutting down).
Of course, I then got terminated because I was too busy fixing the equipment
at 8 transmitter and studio sites to deal with printers and the Internet.

This would have been KXEL, Waterloo, IA, a Class A on 1540.
Yet, one would think that KXEL would have been #1 and not KDAY, which was
waaaaaaaaaaay out there in Santa Monica, on account of the distance from the
Quincy Tin Works.
Anyway, KDAY, always the innovator, and a loyal Gates customer, had one of
the earliest Amplifuzzes, and its original Tx was a 10 kW plate-modulated
Gates,
which was retained in the move from National Boulevard near Santa Monica, to
Alvarado and Effie Streets, in Los Angeles, thereby making the new, and
current, 50 kW DA-2 site an all-Gates shop, although the VP-50 is now gone.
I'd guess the VP-50 was installed in 1968, about thirty-nine years ago.
