Curious... what about direct-drive turntables? I thought they were supposed to be the best.

I have found the Technics SL-1200 to be reasonably adequate for the task. I note that now there are some lower-cost clones, from Stanton and others, that may be suitable. Check with Sam Ash, Musicians Friend and others for pricing. Unfortunately, the best pickup that I have ever used, the Audio-Technica AT-30HE seems to be no longer in producation. Bummer. Perhaps Ortofon stll has a moving-coil unit that may be satisfactory; most pickups now are designed for scrathing and require a tracking force of 4 or 5 grams. ISTM that there are some real high-end pickups, Grado and others, but they sell for $3000 and up -- hardly in my price range.
