[BC] I'm looking for work....too

Bill:
It wasn't your station I applied at. And I purposely left out all the stuff
from my resume like FCC filings for new stations, all my consulting work,
etc. because I didn't want to seem too over-qualified for the job. But
both companies still failed to even take the time to talk to me before
hiring anyone. And they never even took the time to send so much as a form
letter saying "thank you for your interest." That's a lousy way to run a
business, even a radio station.
When we first moved here over two years ago, my wife applied for sales
positions at two different companies (again, not Lotus) that were
advertising for salespeople. One sent her a "your experience doesn't meet
our qualifications" form letter (despite the fact that she had extensive
radio experience) and the other station just ignored her altogether - she
couldn't even get them to return her calls.
I love Las Vegas, and take exception to Douglas's comment. It is a great
city. But I also take exception to your statement that it is "the most
exciting radio market in the world." Based on all the various actors,
singers and other assorted celebrities that can be snagged for on-air
appearances on an almost daily basis, I would agree that it is exciting.
But programming-wise, it is extremely lame. There are people on-air here in
market #32 that I wouldn't have put on-air in Cleveland, Mississippi. When
I have friends visiting and we drive around listening to the radio, they too
are under whelmed at how bad many stations are. (Maybe I need to start
listening to KXPT).

Not withstanding Larry's very bad experience with our local
broadcasters here in Las Vegas, I've been here 7+ years now and find that a
great majority of the broadcasters in town are fine upstanding people, more
than willing to bend over backwards for their employees. We have the usual
mix of big corporation stations, i.e. Clear Channel, CBS, Beasley, but a lot
of smaller ones as well. My current Boss, Tony Bonnici is the best GM (and
VP) I've had in 42 years in the business. One high profile GM in town is no
longer even in the state, (not his own choice) and at least two others have
turned over in recent years. It ain't perfect, but it has it's draws. My
guess is that Larry was way overqualified for the positions he applied for.
It wasn't Larry, but when one of the applicants for a part time remote setup
person opening I had, presents all the FCC filings for new stations and
shows up at the interview unwilling to talk about the job I was hiring, but
wanting to tell us what a great guy and how much he knew about radio
management and all the things we were doing wrong, he was put on the
bottom of the stack.
Larry wouldn't do that, and he is good, and should have received
more polite treatment than he did, but don't write off LV because of his
experiences. It's still the most exciting radio market in the world in my
opinion.
