[BC] Windows XP Problem

Ok, Windows XP experts  -  I have a machine with a couple of problems 
that I have been unable to figure out a solution for yet.


Here are the known symptoms.....

After booting, the machine displays the following error condition in the 
area to the left of the clock:

"Windows - Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable.
Please run the Chkdsk utility."

Click on the message and it goes away - for awhile - then comes back.  
Click on it again to get it to get away again for awhile. 

I bring up the Command Prompt, and run Chkdsk /f  - which says that the 
process will be performed during the reboot process.  Fine.

After I reboot the machine, it goes through the Chkdsk routine at the 
beginning of the Windows boot-up process and appears to do what it needs 
to do. 

When the machine reboots back up to the log on screen - the above error 
message comes up again. 

You can click on it and it will go away for a second or so, then it 
comes back.  After it continues to show back up - click on it to get it 
to go away again.  This goes on for about a half dozen times before it 
doesn't come up again and the machine goes on to boot up to the Desktop. 

There is also a second error message tha comes up ONCE before logging on 
which says:

"Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a 
problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you 
started your computer.  The total paging file drive size for all drives 
may be somewhat larger than the size you specified".    Click on the 
message and it goes away.

Once the Desktop comes up, you can go to the "Control Panel", then into 
"System" and you can change the settings for the Paging File.   On 
several differenct occasions, I have selected "No Paging File", "System 
Managed File" and "Custom Size". 

Reboot the machine and it goes through the same routine again.  Both 
error messages continue to show up in the same pattern as described above.

On the C: Drive, I have searched for a "C:\$Secure" file.  It doesn't exist.

I have also looked at all of the files that start with a "$", as well as 
the files have have "Secure" as part of the file name and compared those 
files with similar named files in other XP machines. Nothing looks 
abnormal.   By the way, there is no "C:\$Secure" files in any of the 
other machines either. 

Any suggestions from the experts on the list?
