Did Sparta, Marti, Vega-Cetec, and Altec make broadcast transmitters?
-------------------
Sparta, yes -- their 707 1kW AM rig was very popular, especially the
kit version, though they did make other transmitters. Sparta, IIRC,
took over some of its transmitter product lines from Fritz Bauer. Of
course, they made cart machines (with Viking mechanisms) and either
rebadged or copies of the QRK or Russco turntables. And
consoles. Their remote board with a small mixer and 2 turntables was
fairly popular.
I don't know when Jim Lawrence got involved with Elcom-Bauer, and I
never got around to asking him about it. He was a really great guy,
and an incredible engineer.
Marti? RPU and STL transmitters/receivers only.
Cetec-Vega didn't make anything more powerful than wireless mic
transmitters, IIRC.
Altec was and is strictly audio. Didn't make much of a dent in the
broadcast market, but was big in sound reinforcement for a long, long
time. The Altec A-7 horn speaker dominated the sound reinforcement
market, especially theaters, for decades. They also made mixers,
compressors and power amps, easily recognized by their green
faceplates. Now Altec-Lansing is more known for computer speakers,
though they make some for the installed-system market -- airport paging, etc.
P.S. For computer speakers my favorite is the Klipsch ProMedia
series. Great sound.
