Problem solved, thanks folks.

Majusoft's directory program did the trick.

Won't let you save as a text file, acts more like a print screen, but that's good enough for my purposes.  Sends out a nice clean legible list.

The "karenware" program went nuts looking for some file in Word. Unfortunately not a file used by my edition of Word.  Had to pull the plug on the machine to stop it from chasing its tail, the three fingered salute being ignored.
