A major drawback to the Dolby B system is that it's
threshold-dependent. If levels into the decoder are set too low,
there will be too much high-frequency roll-off and the audio will
sound dull. That's why the calibration tone was supposed to be
transmitted daily, but many people never bothered to set up their
decoders properly.
Many stations installed the Dolby encoder ahead of other processing,
and this also caused calibration errors.
