A great number of good comments made on this topic, however Dana, consider
what happens when something louder than intended gets set to a digital 
device
without peak limiting.  Things get really ugly, very quick.

Here in Seattle classical KING-FM is running an Orban 8500 (Thanks Bob)
using the Classical Music Preset.   What this does is turns off the 
AGC...but
leaves most of the rest intact in an un-colored way.   Here the FM sounds
great (provided you are not in a mulipath area or are moving with it picket
fences)  The HD is nothing short of wonderful....and you can listen to it
while in motion ! We have had zero complaints about the impact of the 
processing.
