A good question. Some of those early
products seem to have the "A" for
"Audio" ... or perhaps they were
         emulating a popular car?

I was just informed that the Gates 250A
(I am not aware of a previous model) included
a tube complement of 11 tubes designated
         as "Compressor."

The audio section showed six tubes. The RF two.
