As a listener, I find this chest thumping by the originating
stations annoying. When I worked at WCUZ, it started on the Tiger
Network. I called the originating station, WJR, and they had the
audacity to say that this was the only way they could ID their station.
They also fed WJR's commercials down the line. So if the board announcer
was late, you would hear those. Waaaay back in 1973, the late Warren
Reynolds did the Berlin Raceway network, originating from us at WOOD. I
fed our "network" of 4 stations from our audition side. They never heard
our ID's nor commercials. There is no reason the originating stations
have to do it.

If the network was setup correctly, then the originating station should be
able to have a separate feed for the flag ship station and another feed for the
network for commericals and IDs.
Back in the days when I worked in network radio at Ray Communications/WGAI-AM
in NC, at the point of my arrival you'd hear one set of commericals on the AM
and another set on the network. IDs and commericals from the AM was never put
on the network side regardless if it was The Growise Gardener Show, On The
Scene w/Bo Gritz or some sports feed. [The program bus on the board fed the AM
and the audition bus fed the network when the application was needed via a
patch bay] Putting local spots/IDs and the like on any network is just poor
taste...especially if it has nothing to do with the network itself and the
affiliate stations.
Granted back in the day of cart machines, the board op in such a situation
had to be very much on top of what was airing where and when.....and often meant
starting two cart machines at once along with potting things down/up grabbing
the phone or having to yell at someone.....sometimes all things occuring at
once

Today with computers, the task isn't such as great of an undertaking...so for
networks to feed local spots from the flagship...well it just shouldn't
really happen. Fill the network slots with PI spots...at least the network stands
to make a little extra possible change....plus keeps A Chicago based commerical
from airing in Pudunkville USA if the board op happens to miss a cue. If all
else, during those "local breaks: have dead air on the network .....much like
MRN and PRN did at one time.

Of course an ideal situation would be to have an operator manning the network
and another operator manning the flagship...two separate studios and such and
such. But the reality of it all, sometimes the budget or bean counters do not
allow for such a thing to happen....so one person has to do it all from one
studio and not everyone can do extreme multi tasking.
