During the custom process, I am sure that there has been some 
documentation done.  Usually in some form that is easily converted to 
a lockable PDF.

In regards to keeping them out of the hands of competitors, just do a 
registration process so that only certain people can get at them.  Or 
be able to email them out to the client.

custom system manuals and info on the web, but I assume most
manufacturers are clever enough to keep additional copies of custom
systems and designs available (in print and PDF) if the customer
calls... most... ;)
