I don't think I've ever worked in a market where stations wouldn't
help one another in emergency situations. I've done a lot of network
radio and would try and help an affiliate. If one station encountered
some kind of disaster, several times I knew another affiliate who had
a loaner. In every case they were willing to help. Most often, all
they asked for was shipping expenses.
In many cases keeping a competitor on the air is in your best
interest. As a programmer, I want the playing field to be stable. If
a competitor is off the air during a survey I'm going to have to do
some explaining to media buyers who don't trust the numbers. It does
a lot to minimize the "it's a fluke" excuse for not making a buy.
