This practice has one major drawback. All eggs in one basket.
At WLAD in Danbury, CT we had a problem some years ago.
One phase would frequently fail. I had the three phases balanced
to within 2 amps. This caused two studios to go down. I solved
the immediate problem by having a DPDT switch installed by an
electrician to swap the bad phase. Saved us many times. The
power company eventually found a defective insulator on a
transformer. The building has since installed a generator.
