[BC] KLEO, KOOK & KOMA -- Oooooops....

KOMA was a great station.  Remember the nighttime spots for the band "Baby"?
"Tonight Baby appears in Amarillo..."

Then every evening at 6, the old 50's sung jingle appeared..."some records
heard, or given away"...were provided through the promotional consideration
of record companies, artists and distributors.

Sadly, KOMA's owners, Renda, changed the calls to KOKC a few years ago.  The
KOKC calls had been held by a Guthrie, Oklahoma station for years.  It's one
thing to rename a station, but to rename it with calls held by a puny
station in the same market, just doesn't make much sense.

At one time broadcasters built around a station's heritage.  Now,
programmers seem anxious to toss it all away in an effort to re-image the
station.  More often than not, it doesn't work.  There is nothing harder
than trying to revive a station under those circumstances.  Just consider
Oklahoma City's WKY.
