I had heard that the power grid was now locked to GPS. Anyone knw if tat's
true?

Dana,

Up to about 5 years ago most of them were locked to our 468.8375 Mhz signal
from our spacecraft (GOES-10) Canada also used this on their long DC
transmission lines to measure faults. The time code and sub frequencies
were generated from one of our Cesium standards. The FAA and many TV
stations used this timing signal (receive equip. was made by True Time). I
found out about the FAA when I disconnected an unmarked cable from our
timing system and got a call from the FAA saying all their radars lost sync
(This got me one big owh S**t). Needless to say the tech. that was supposed
to have everything marked got most of the blame. I did notice KCAL used a
60Khz True Time receiver for their time code, which was IRIG-B where we were
using NASA-36. We now have switched to IRIG-B and all standard frequency
references are being switched from 5 Mhz to 10 Mhz, as all our
up-converters, transmitters and receivers are phase locked.

Most everyone is switching to GPS but not all are there yet..
