" p.s. My cousin has an electric clock from the 1920s, which I
think wins the prize for "oldest electrical device still used
24/7".

I have an electric clock on the living room wall that is a real oldie. It
is a weight driven pendulum device. When the weight gets almost as low as
possible, it closes contacts, energizing a solenoid, which pulls the weight
back up. This occurs about every twenty minutes. Originally, the clock had
a very old transformer and copper oxide bridge rectifier. I left the
original guts inside and added a fuse, an impedance protected transformer
and silicon bridge rectifier. The original electrical components looked
pretty old and I didn't want the clock to burn my house down. With the
pendulum adjusted properly, it keeps good time and couldn't care less what
the line frequency is. I've had it running for about thirty years.
