Robert Meuser commented regarding poor coverage from an h-pol signal:

"That really does not prove or disprove anything. I can park near the studio of an NYC radio station and have full view of the Empire State Building about the top third of it and have a Philly Station over ride the signal. It is a propagation thing."

I realize that. But driving the same road for two years...and comparing the H-pol NPR station with circularly polarized stations about the same distance away leads me to the conclusion that I'm not taking down my ERI roto-tiller for horizontal dipoles anytime soon.

It's true, over long distances, an H-pol antenna may have more signal than V-pol. That's fine for 6 or 2 meter ssb. But over those long distances here in the east, you're going to run right into the primary field of the co-channel. We don't broadcast to audiences 100 miles away, we need the coverage inside 25~30 miles.
