[BC] RE: Multiple ISDN

We of SCMS represent the Barix line (and many of the other fine
manufacturers who are mentioned here and on whose behalf others have weighed
in with their usual mix of wit and wizardry) and I was intrigued by Dennis
Jones' initial question-" Say someone wanted to send multiple feeds to....20
stations across the US/Canada. What are the options?"

I posed the question to Johannes G. Rietschel of Barix for their official
response and the opportunity to clarify their tech. Here it is-

Hi Jim - of course, thank you for giving us a chance to give you an answer !



a) the Barix Instreamer supports up to 8 "browser" (winamp, WMP etc)
connections - with the Barix "BRTP" format, which is a pulling
RTP (realtime streaming protocol) variant, theoretically up to 64
simultaneous listeners are supported by the $400 instreamer !
The big problem typically is the UPLINK capacity on the sending (Instreamer)
side ... if you use a standard ADSL connection, you
typically can NOT support more than a couple of listeners - so for that you
need to use a "broadcast tower" (=replicator) on the internet
such as www.streamguys.com's service. They receive a feed from the
Instreamer and make it available to any number of listeners,
without the need to install a big network pipe at the instreamer side.
Streamguys is currently testing a low-latency rebroadcasting variant with
Barix, which provides end-to-end latency of way less than 500ms
with an unlimited number of receivers and a single feed from the encoding
site.

So - to stream from one location to 10-20 listeners, use Instreamer and
Exstreamers of Barix with the BRTP protocol (and a big-enough uplink
at the instreamer site) or use a rebroadcasting service.
