The discussion about which Pol is best for FM
reminded me of the following -
> I recall after the Commish require all the Class C's
to increase ERP's to 100Kw...Many station did not
wish to purchase the hardware to give them 100Kw in
each Pol and elected to run 100 in H-Pol and something
less in V-Pol...I don't recall those stations suffering all
that much compared to those with H &V's the same.
> As for long distances. I recall, years ago, playing with
2 meter SSB. I could talk from Tacoma, Wa to Portland,
Oregon (just over 100 miles) using H-Pol, we tried V-Pol
with horrible results. H-Pol was clearly superior. I have
to think that the same applies to FM.
> Reflections and refractions really mess up polarity...This
explains why rotating antennas can produce different results.
> Mobile receiving antennas used to be largely vertical...but
today car-makers understand that this is no longer
important and produce glass mounted antennas whose
polarity is anyones guess.
> I don't know of anyone that produces a true circular antenna
for FM consumers, if they did their results would be compromised
by the various rotations used by broadcasters these days.
