Yup... I have a transformerless solid-state GE clock radio from the '70s.
It has an analog clock motor, an AM radio tuner board, and a large wire-
wound resistor all wired in series across the AC line.  The resistor runs
hot enough that it has its own ventilation grille on the back of the
cabinet.  I've had it running 24/7 for the past decade, and I can only
imagine how many dollars of electricity that wire-wound resistor has
burned off into heat over the years!
