The advantage of higher voltages is that it reduces the current so you
can use smaller guage wiring. Ofcourse, this is more important for
high power loads than small.
By the way, the old Westinghouse 50-KW transmitters used 2400V delta
in which is really over-kill I think but Westinghouse was a big power
equipment manufacturer so maybe thats how they sold more stuff.
