When Edison began building electric power distribution systems in the
late 19th century they were all DC. AC distribution did not begin to
catch on until Tesla's polyphase system was put into large-scale use
at Niagara Falls in 1896.
DC power distribution continued in many parts of the country well
into the 20th century. It was most often found in rural areas, but
sometimes lingered in urban areas. Consolidated Edison in New York
continued to provide DC service to some customers, such as those
using vintage DC-powered elevators, until 2005.
