I point out that it was 2 million watts carrier, 8 million watts peak.

Such powers are common in that area.  Can you imagine how
far you would go if you had a few megawatts carrier going into
an antenna with a power gain of 4 or 5, located, say, in Boston,
and shooting down the east coast of the U.S?  On a frequency
of 540 kHz?

"Over there" the ground conductivity sucks and power is
needed.  But, as Adil said, he who has the loudest signal on the
dial carries the most political clout.
