[BC] WLW my take

When WLW was at 500 kw, they behaved like a network of one station. That
was because they could. They were 100% original programming, attracted big
names, and had a large studio complex. the "Nation's Station" slogan was I
think the top off. My understanding was that originally the 500 kw was an
experiment. You would assume under the circumstances that they would
quietly conduct field strength measurments for a year or two at different
times and seasons all around the U.S. and within the day g/w, then submit
the results and FCC would decide if the 500 kw auth. should be made
available to other 1-As. but no, they exploited the situation and kept
getting renewals of the special authorization for the "experiment." It's
not surprising the other 1-As seethed over this. If i were a licensee
providing top quality programming on my 50 kw, i would have been unhappy
about this also. It's too bad it was handled this way but oh well, it's
all moot now.

The standard claim for 50Kw stations was that they served 38 states.
