[AF] NDB sites

Yep,

TUK was one half of a Consolan navigation pair. When Consolan was
decommissioned (It was made obsolete by Loran-C), the other site across the
island was taken down and TUK was converted to a NDB, run by a non profit
foundation. The paranoia surrounding 9/11 caused the National Weather Service
to re-evaluate leasing of their facilities and essentially took the NWS out of
the tower leasing business. Since both WRZE and TUK were privately owned, they
were left out in the cold. Down went the tower, the land was sold and up wnet
a bunch of houses (Just what they needed on ecologically fragile Nantucket!).
Yet another example of the government's "helping" us!

TUK was at one time 4 kW, by far the strongest out there and useful from
an ocean away. They took it down because they couldn't keep the tower
from rusting IIRC. Shame.
