It seems like auctions might be useful for selling that last bit of unsold
inventory. Something is better than nothing! The quality of the ads, as
mentioned previously, could be an issue. While not hearing ads for magic
pills on the radio, I'm hearing lots of ads on secret methods to get out
of paying your bills and similar schemes.
Ad quality is also a problem on Google AdSense. I review the ads that
appear on my FCC Rules site and add the "less than tasteful" ads to my
block list. I haven't had to do this very often, though. I do find,
however, that a lot of ads not relevant to the page show up. For example,
http://www.hallikainen.com/FccRules/2007/15/117/ , which deals with TV
receivers and the new labeling requirements for analog receivers, brings
up a bunch of ads for cars. I guess these advertisers just tell Google
they'll take anything.
