If you purchase a new cell phone, observe that they are getting way too "smart" read "dumb." Before it is out-of-warranty, charge it well, then put it inside a completely sealed metal container such as cooking pot with a metal cover. Check it after about 1/2 day (say, overnight). If the battery is discharged, bring it back and get your money back. These things will not work in the "real world."

What happens is the cell-phone jacks its output power (and thus its input power) to maximum while trying to contact a cell tower. It is so dumb that it does not give up. It will literally destroy the battery and eventually its output circuitry attempting to contact a tower. There are many places out in the "boonies" where radiomen go, where there will not be good propagation to cell towers. The result is that such a phone will work fine at convention centers and large cities. In the outback, the battery may not have a charge when you need it.
