In my career that's always been the case. While engineers are 
invaluable they're usually treated as aliens (space not Mexican) by 
sales types. In most cases the GM came from sales. In the corporate 
political pecking order engineers are fair game. The engineers who 
survive in this environment are those with enhanced social and 
communication skills. You have to work the system to counter the 
"cost center" view by management.

Without the help of engineers there would be no profit centers. Those 
skilled in self-preservation find a way to blow their own horns 
without diminishing the importance of those who politically outrank 
them. Reality says all departments are important.
