Always, the letters ahead of the colon are the protocol, so your
browser knows which handler to pass it off to.
http the browser handles itself.
ftp some browsers ( almost all except Microsoft, but maybe even
they finally caught on ) and the rest hand the stream to the ftp client,
and so forth and so on.
mms:// is the multi-media messaging service protocol, used primarily
by mobile phones. Essentially an extension of sms protocol.
