  I would submit using Polypropylene or silk as a base layer.  Poly-pro 
and silk are both known for wicking moisture away from the skin. A 
rather strong, but accurate comment from those in the know is "Cotton 
Kills!!" Never wear cotton as a base layer as it will never dry unless 
exposed to air and will cool you down in the process regardless. Most 
socks contain a LOT of cotton.

When ever I know I'll be out in the cold for an extended period, I dress 
with Poly-pro (or something with a lot of it or equivilent) as a base 
layer. Wife likes the silk. We're rarely cold even after a few hours of 
standing around watching/shooting photos of dogs mushing or football 
players tackling.  And she mushes...
