IIRC, back in 1965, the (then) MTA had their own power plants all over-and
there was talk of shutting them down and buying power from Edison. Then we had
the blackout and all that went by the wayside over night.

Rich,
Ever driven past the gigantic power plant off Broadway (route 99) in
Charlestown, off the route-16 circle? That's where Boston gets its
"essential" power and it's all AC, converted to DC for the subways at various
"power stations" throughout the city.
Cheers,

Hmm. During the1965 blackout only the subway, trolleys and trackless
trolleys were running. I was told Boston was the only city where the
transit system had its own power plants.
