 Gel coat is water proof, fiberglass is not.
 The right epoxy weathers just fine.

 The real reason for gel coat is so that when a hull is sprayed, that the
 cured fiberglass can be removed from the mold.
 A benefit is that the make-up of gel coat does weather well, and will
 take dye, so that it can be dyed to any color you like.
