I fixed it! This is the magic; you might want to save this information. Try the "activate by Internet" menu and enter the license key provided on the computer or the envelope with the distribution disc. If it fails, go to the "activate by telephone" menu and then "return" to the initial "activate by Internet" menu. It will now prompt to CHANGE the license key. Either use the same one or invent anything. It will be saved, activated, and it will become your new key without any further problems. I tried it several times, even using swearwords for the license key. It liked them all!

The OS activation routine in Windows, in part, checks the product key against a database of keys known to Microsoft to be stolen and/or used illegally.  Are you sure that XP disc wasn't used on another computer(s)?

Of course, this computer about 6 years ago --at the factory, but with a different hard disk.
