Something that RF Designers do, even in modern times, when evaluating a new plastic to be used in a RF environment, is to put a sample across the top of a coffee-cup containing water, in a microwave oven. The water will provide a load for the magnetron, and douse the plastic if it gets hot. Want to scare a co-worker? Put some ping-pong balls in a microwave oven! They are very lossy and will explode with a loud bang! On the other hand, plastics like most Teflons, polycarbonate (Rexolite), and polyethylene won't even get warm. However, polypropylene, polyvinyl-chloride, and Lucite (poly-ethyl-methyl-acrylate) will melt and burn.

Cheers,

But PVC is lossy. VERY lossy, and has even been known to
 charcoal and ignite.
