Pockets of Edison's D-C system still exist today, although I really wonder
why. Too expensive to modernize those old elevators?

That's pretty much what happened in the ancient building CBS Radio inhabits
in Minneapolis.  The local power company had tried for years to get WCCO to
abandon or replace the freight elevator gear but continued to supply the DC.
Finally the utility installed their own AC to DC converter (at utility
company expense) to abandon the DC service, and the elevator is still there.

The car has a reversing switch to go either up or down, and sometimes when
you move it the switch arcs internally and the sound of the arc is more like
RF than a 60 Hz arc--- pretty cool sound!
