Ok, while I'm thinking -

  On windowx XP, in the networking options, you can do a bit of 
'appending'... in the advanced TCP/IP settings.

   You can Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes, append 
parent of the primary DNS, append specific DNS suffixes, etc. (under the DNS 
tab)

   The default seems to be appending parent suffixes of the Primary DNS 
suffixes.

   If you're using fixed IP addresses, do you need to fiddle with all this?
