Best antivirus - 2007 -  ESET's NOD32.  Not free, but VERY good; 
frequent updates, and entirely in the background.  Schedule it to run 
full sweeps while you're not home or asleep, and the only way you'll 
know it's there is the little icon in the system tray... until it 
catches something.
