The budding young journalists who send me their resumes all seem to  have 
something sports related in their training.  Yes, there is a need  for sports 
talent.  They hear the sports stations and get that "passion"  for the biz 
discussed time and again on this board.  But their hopes are  dashed because, as 
pointed out, many of the stations are satellators.   Those that do local 
play-by-play often hire former jocks to call the  game.  Several sports talk show 
hosts come from print.
 
At the same time, those with a real  passion for radio news are hard to find. 
 In my humble opinion the  schools are to blame.  They see the dollar signs 
of prospective students  backed by government loans.  So they offer courses or 
majors in sports  journalism and sports management.  The mic they end up using 
is at the  drive-thru asking if you want biggie fries.

My friend Brenda has a cooking show.  She's  talented. In my chauvinist 
worldview that could be considered  programming aimed at the female demo.  A 
well-produced cooking show  can attract a female audience.  But a "foodie" station 
won't  retain a cume.  Of course, The Food Network on TV proves me wrong.
