Paul,
  I've learned it takes time. It's more than reading any book. It's
experience!  Anytime you know of any AM projects going on, no matter how
big or small, hang around just to learn.  You may get yourself caught up
in a similar situation someday, and you reflect on what you learned when
you were younger. I've had some thoughts hit me when I'm stuck in the
middle of an AM problem in the middle of the night.
