Many examples are possible, like floppy drives !
On Novel, and *nix machines, they may sit unused for years, then fail
 to work when needed.
Doesn't happen on Microsoft systems, largely because Microsoft checks
the drive every few seconds for the presence of media to auto-execute,
auto-load, etc, thereby shaking the dirt off.

Motors that sit for extended periods of time show the same effects,
probably a build up of atmospheric contaminates and air born dust
and such building up on the commutator, and forming an insulated surface.
Running the motor every now and again will cause the brushes to "brush"
 off whatever has settled there.

Inductive motors seem to have less of this, but still get sluggish as the
lubricants in the bearings dry out.

Doesn't take much to keep 'em working, but some exercise seems a good idea.
