thanks for the explanation Sid; i wish i could have been there to witness
the chain of cues!
sounds like the d.j. had to time his cue about a few seconds early. haha

Probably a producer, at that time a member of a union. When WABC
started as a pop music station late in 1960, the control room held an
engineer (member of NABET), a "platter turner" (member of AFM) and a
producer (Producer's Guild). The DJ was in a separate studio. Throwing
cues was an adventure in timing, especially if the DJ came from a place
where he ran everything. The DJ would cue the producer, who would cue
the engineer, who would (if the cue involved starting a record) cue the
platter turner. By the time the mid-60s rolled around, the producer and
the platter turner had been eliminated from the mix, and the DJ and
engineer were in the same studio facing each other. The air studio had
also been acoustically designed such that the speakers could be dimmed
rather than muted when the mics were open, with no resulting feedback,
so that the DJ and engineer didn't need headphones.
